After dragging ourselves away from Croatia, our aim was to visit Lake Bled which a friend had recommended to us on the way to Austria. Our stay over that night was not planned as we were behind our haphazard schedule and so, as we tend to do, we decided to wing it and see where fate would lead us. We drove through some beautiful countryside and arrived mid afternoon, and as the photos show, it was glarey which made capturing the lakes beauty somewhat of a challenge.
Lake Bled is fed by streams and melting snow from the alpine area bordering the lake. In winter the entire lake freezes and people can reach the church, which is the only building on the small island by skating across. The water is very unusual in that it is clear, yet the most amazing (clean) green colour. If I wasn't so heavily into holiday mode, I would research why water from snow is this colour and report my findings. Hopefully one of the classes reading the blogs will take up the challenge, and email us the answer so I can update this blog.
The boys are loving the new life that spring is bringing with foals, calves, lambs and babies of all the birdlife we continue to see taking advantage of the warmth to raise their young. We have marvelled at the changes we have seen to the countryside since our arrival in Europe. At the beginning of our European adventure we found that the trees were bare and the numerous vineyards barren. Now as we drive around we cant help but notice how green everything is. Lake Bled with its rich green waters and alpine green trees highlights the beauty of Europe at this time of year.
We reluctantly dragged ourselves away from the lake in our quest to catch up to where we hoped to be, and headed towards Austria. For followers of the blog you will be getting sick of hearing this, but... we will definitely be coming back here.
